2007 Smart Awards -- January 31, 2008
Winnipeg Convention Centre
Master
of Ceremonies was Smart Partners chair Dale Oswald (right). Dale
provided an overview of the organization's activities over the
past year, including the creation of the Aboriginal Business Innovation
Centre at the Aboriginal Centre on Higgins, supported by CAHRD
and the continued expansion of the Computer Lending Library. There
are CLLs at CAHRD, the Selkirk and District Community Learning
Centre, the International
Centre and a brand new CLL in Fisher River First Nation. Dale
also introduced the new Smart Partners website, designed and hosted
by Modern Earth.
Past
Chair Simone Smith (left) introduced keynote speaker Bruce Gjovig, Entrepreneur
Coach and Director of the Center for Innovation, University of
North Dakota. Bruce is a champion for entrepreneur causes including
fostering innovation, tech incubators, university tech parks,
tech entrepreneur outreach programs as well as angel, seed and
venture capital initiatives. He has been North Dakota’s
“go-to guy” for entrepreneurship, innovation, and
capital investing since he launched the Center in 1984.
As a visionary, Bruce strategically directs
the Center and is continually innovating. He coaches entrepreneurs on strategies
and capital formation. Bruce provided wise and useful information on business
incubation's role in economic development.
Karen Keppler, the Executive Director of Smart Partners, joined Dale in presenting a gift to Bruce. Bruce received Winnipeg, Images from a Century Ago, a book of historical and architectural pictures of the City of Winnipeg.
